The carp is a fish that has a rather spotty reputation. In some Asian cultures, it is regarded as sacred and has a set of fascinating myths and legends surrounding it. Other cultures consider the carp to be offal -- not worthy of catching. For my money, the carp can be a formidable opponent, and if I win the fight, I always return the fish to the water, out of some feeling of respect, I imagine. Lyricism aside, any angler out for carp needs to be properly outfitted for the coming battle. My Daiwa Emcast Evo 5500-AB fixed spool carp reel is always up to the task.
About the Daiwa Emcast Evo 5500-AB Fixed Spool Carp Reel
I'm an angler who likes plenty of power in my reel and this Daiwa model doesn't disappoint. The power of this big pit reel is both deceptive and smooth. Big pit reels, by the way, are capable of holding a much greater quantity of line than conventional reels -- sometimes as much as three times more. The 5500-AB has a zero-friction main shaft and 7 quality ball bearings (BBs) that deliver an exceptionally smooth retrieve as well as a high degree of winding power. The reel comes with Daiwa's patented Air Bail® feature. Usually found on more expensive models, Air Bail® is a super-strong, lightweight bail design that has no protrusions to snag your line.
More Features of the Evo 5500-AB Reel
Of the 7 BBs on the reel, 5 are sealed, a feature I particularly favour because it keeps my reel running smoothly with very little maintenance. Another great feature of this reel is its anti-backlash system (ABS). Backlash is a condition in which line becomes a tangled mass, also called a "bird's nest." An ABS system reduces spool overrun during casting and helps prevent backlash. The Evo 5500 has a lightweight aluminium spool, along with a tin coated spool ring, both of which help to prevent corrosion. Infinite anti-reverse is another good feature to have. On reels with this component, the handle is prevented from turning in the reverse direction -- something I appreciate during the fight.
A Few More Details
Even the handle of the Evo 5500-AB reel is well conceived and designed. It's made from machine-cut aluminium and has a one-touch folding handle. A wooden handle knob is another great detail. The reel comes with a spare aluminium spool. The designers at Daiwa have really gotten it right with the Twist Buster feature on this reel. Although there are many ways line gets tangled, it mainly happens during the retrieve. Twist Buster dramatically reduces this problem, leaving you more time to fish and less time to fiddle with your tackle. Finally, the reel has worm shaft oscillation and a zero friction main shaft. What more could you ask for?
If you're looking to add to your collection of carp fishing tackle, the Daiwa Emcast Evo 5500-AB fixed spool reel is one to seriously consider.
